6 Tips for Dental Implant Aftercare

Getting dental implants is a big step toward restoring your oral health. Because they look and function much like natural teeth, dental implants can improve eating, speaking, and overall well-being. But your investment in dental health doesn’t stop when you leave the chair. Proper aftercare is important to reduce your risk of complications.

Best practices for dental implant aftercare include taking medication as directed, sticking to gentle foods, and learning how to spot the signs of a potential complication. Most importantly, follow your dentist’s instructions carefully. The following is general information, but depending on your personal circumstances, your dentist may offer more detailed instructions.

A Review of the Dental Implant Process

A dental implant is a titanium “root” placed directly into your jawbone, where it fuses with your natural bone. This creates a stable foundation for an artificial tooth that looks and functions like a natural tooth.

Here’s a brief summary of the implant process:

Initial assessment: Your dentist examines your mouth, reviews X-rays, takes an impression and determines if your gums and bones are healthy enough for an implant.

Placing the implant: The titanium implant is surgically inserted into your jawbone underneath your gums. Then, the incision is stitched back together.

Osseointegration: The jawbone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration. This can take 3 to 9 months, perhaps longer, depending on the patient.

Attaching the abutment: A post called an abutment is attached to the implant. Sometimes, this can be done in the same appointment as the initial implant.

Attaching the tooth: Finally, an artificial replacement tooth is attached to the abutment. This may take multiple appointments.

6 Dental Implant Aftercare Tips

If taken care of properly, dental implants can last for life. However, they do require commitment. Start taking proactive care of your implants after your procedure.

1. Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions

This may include detailed instructions on how to clean the area, prescriptions for medication, and advice on eating or drinking. Your dentist may also recommend specific products and provide a timeline of what to expect. Ignoring your dentist’s instructions may put you at greater risk for infection, pain, and delayed healing.

Everyone is unique, so discuss with your dentist how to best care for yourself based on your personal health requirements.

2. Keep It Clean

It’s important to keep implants clean, just as you would with your natural teeth. Floss after your gums have healed. You can also ask your dentist for recommendations for a good antibacterial rinsing solution to help avoid infections.

Dental implants also require consistent, ongoing care, including regular dental cleanings. Remember to schedule general cleanings going forward.

3. Don’t Smoke

Smoking may affect whether the bone successfully fuses to the implant. Besides increasing your risk of complications after a surgical procedure, smoking poses a risk to oral health in general.

If you smoke and are interested in dental implants, have a conversation with your doctor and dentist. They can recommend cessation tools, other options, and resources.

4. Avoid Certain Foods

Immediately after surgery, your mouth will be sensitive. Stick to soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, and ice cream for the first several days or as long as your dentist recommends. Also, avoid hot foods and beverages (like soup), as well as sticky, hard, or crunchy foods.

5. Take Medication as Directed

Pain and swelling are normal after dental implant surgery. Your dentist may prescribe pain relievers or recommend over-the-counter pain medication. Take this medication as directed. You should also inform your dentist about any medications you’re taking for existing health conditions to reduce the risk of adverse drug interactions.

6. Learn the Signs of a Potential Complication

Like any other medical procedure, a dental implant has risks. Contact your dentist right away if you experience symptoms like:

A wobbly, loose, or mobile implant

Pain and swelling that lasts longer than a week

Discharge from the site

Bleeding, swollen, or inflamed gums

Fever

Lymph nodes in the neck that are swollen

Other Things to Know

In addition to these tips, keep the following in mind:

Implants are not suitable for everyone: If you have poor jawbone structure, you may need a bone graft to make it strong enough to hold the implant.

Implants take time: You may need multiple appointments over multiple months.

Implants need ongoing care: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits are vital.

Are Implants Better than Dentures?

Determining whether dentures or dental implants are better for replacing lost or damaged teeth depends on several factors. The best way to determine whether dentures or dental implants are best for your needs is to visit your dentist and get a professional opinion.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a more permanent option for replacing missing teeth.

There are 2 types of dental implants:

Endosteal implants consist of a titanium or ceramic post that is surgically inserted into the jawbone. This post can fuse with the bone, providing a stable base for a crown, which looks and functions like a natural tooth. This process, known as osseointegration, typically takes several months but offers a long-lasting solution for missing teeth.

Subperiosteal implants are positioned beneath the gums and above the jawbone, and feature a metal framework with small extensions that emerge slightly from the gums. Subperiosteal implants are often suggested for individuals who lack sufficient healthy jawbone for endosteal implant placement or who prefer to avoid additional procedures like bone grafts before implant placement.

Benefits of Dental Implants

One of the biggest advantages of dental implants is their stability. Since they are anchored into the jawbone, they should not shift or move. Additionally, implants help maintain jawbone density. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate. Implants can stimulate the bone, preventing decay and preserving facial structure.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They come in 2 main types:

Complete or partial dentures offer a practical and budget-friendly solution for replacing missing teeth and enhancing the contours of your mouth and face.

Partial dentures are typically comprised of plastic, nylon, or metal plates with multiple false teeth affixed, and clip securely onto natural teeth. Partial dentures are removable for easy cleaning.

Despite being artificial, dentures require daily hygiene maintenance to prevent plaque, tartar, and bacteria buildup that could potentially impact both your natural teeth and gums.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures can offer an immediate solution for missing teeth. Unlike implants, which require a surgical procedure, dentures can be fitted relatively quickly. Modern dentures are designed to look natural and can significantly improve your smile and facial appearance.

When Are Implants Necessary?

Dental implants are often recommended for individuals who have lost one or more teeth but still have healthy gums and sufficient bone density. They are particularly beneficial for single-tooth replacements or for those who need a more permanent solution than bridges or partial dentures can offer.

Implants are durable and can last a long time with proper care. They also help maintain the jawbone’s integrity, preventing the sunken look that sometimes occurs with missing teeth. This is particularly important for seniors who want to preserve their facial structure as they age.

When Are Dentures Necessary?

Dentures are often the go-to option for those who need immediate tooth replacement. Whether due to an accident, decay, or gum disease, dentures can be quickly fitted, restoring function and appearance in a short time.

Dentures may provide flexibility, as they can be easily adjusted or replaced as needed. This makes them a convenient option for those who may experience changes in their oral structure over time. They also do not require surgery, making them suitable for those who may not be candidates for implants due to health issues.

Longevity and Maintenance

Durability of implants: Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution. With proper care, they can last a lifetime. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are essential to maintain implant longevity. The crown may need to be replaced after many years, but the implant itself can last much longer.

Durability of dentures: Dentures generally have a shorter lifespan compared to implants. They typically need to be replaced every 7–10 years due to wear and changes in the jawbone structure. Proper care, such as daily cleaning and regular dental visits, can extend their life, but they are typically not as durable as implants.

Health Considerations

Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. Dentures may be a more accessible option for those with underlying health issues that may complicate surgery.

Age and Bone Density

Age and bone density play a significant role in determining suitability for implants. Patients with good bone density may be ideal candidates. Seniors could face challenges if they have experienced significant bone loss. Dentures are less affected by age and bone density, making them a more versatile option.

Making an Informed Decision

Deciding between dental implants and dentures is a significant decision that impacts your oral health. Both options offer unique benefits and come with their own set of challenges. By understanding the differences, considering your personal needs, and consulting with your dental professional, you can make an informed choice that best suits your lifestyle.

Do Dental Implants Get Cavities?

Dental implants are made from durable materials like titanium and ceramic, which are not susceptible to decay.

This means that dental implants cannot develop cavities like natural teeth can. However, this does not mean that you can neglect your oral hygiene. Bacteria and plaque can still build up around the implant, leading to other issues that can compromise the implant’s success.

If you have dental implants, it is important to continue taking care of your oral health through routine cleanings and dental exams.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide a durable solution for missing teeth, seamlessly blending in with your natural teeth. These titanium-made metal cylinders can restore your smile and support the structure of your mouth and face.

Surgically installed into the jawbone where teeth are absent, these implants mimic the function of natural roots, helping to improve stability and functionality akin to your original teeth.

The Importance of Caring for Your Dental Implants

While dental implants themselves cannot get cavities, the surrounding gum tissue and bone are still at risk if proper care is not taken.

Neglecting your dental implants can lead to:

Gum disease: Just like with natural teeth, poor oral hygiene can cause gum disease around the implant, leading to inflammation, bleeding, and discomfort.

Peri-implantitis: This is a condition similar to gum disease but specific to dental implants. It involves inflammation around the implant and can lead to bone loss if left untreated.

Bone loss: If the surrounding bone becomes infected or weakened, it can compromise the stability of the dental implant.

A Good Oral Health Routine for Those with Dental Implants

Maintaining a good oral health routine can improve the longevity of your dental implants.

Daily Brushing and Flossing

Brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste helps remove plaque and bacteria. Flossing daily is also essential to clean between the teeth and around the implant.

Using Antimicrobial Mouthwash

Rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash can help reduce bacteria in the mouth, providing an extra layer of protection against gum disease and peri-implantitis.

Regular Dental Checkups

Routine dental visits allow your dentist to monitor the health of your dental implants and detect any potential issues early on. Professional cleanings also help remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing might miss.

Other Ways Dental Implants Can Be Damaged

While dental implants are highly durable, they are not indestructible.

Here are some other factors that can damage your dental implants:

Physical trauma—Accidents, sports injuries, or even biting down on hard objects can cause damage to the implant or the surrounding bone.

Poor oral hygiene—Neglecting your oral hygiene can lead to gum disease and bone loss, which can compromise the stability of the implant.

Smoking—Smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications, including peri-implantitis and implant failure.

The Role of Routine Cleanings and Dental Exams

Regular dental cleanings and exams are essential for maintaining the health of your dental implants. These appointments allow your dentist to:

Check for signs of gum disease or peri-implantitis.

Clean hard-to-reach areas to prevent plaque buildup.

Determine if the implant is functioning correctly and is free from damage.

Preserving Your Oral Health

Dental implants offer a solution for replacing missing teeth and improving your smile. While they do not get cavities, it is crucial to maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent other issues that can affect the health of your implants.

By following a good oral health routine, attending regular dental checkups, and being mindful of factors that can cause damage, you can enjoy the benefits of your dental implants for years to come.

Will Dental Insurance Cover Implants?

Dental implants have become a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. However, the cost of dental implants can be a concern for many, prompting them to wonder if dental insurance will cover the expenses.

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover dental services provided in a dental office. However, dental insurance policies can vary significantly.

What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial titanium tooth roots surgically inserted into the jawbone. They serve as a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth, such as crowns or dentures, offering a long-term solution to tooth loss.

Dental implants resemble your natural teeth to restore function and aesthetics in the mouth. Your dentist may recommend dental implants in the following instances:

To prevent bone loss if you have lost a tooth

As an alternative to dentures

To fill a gap when a tooth is missing to keep adjacent teeth stable

To help maintain the structural integrity of the jaw

To preserve speech patterns and chewing ability

Generally, the dental implant process involves multiple stages. Your implant process might look something like this:

Your dentist will first examine your mouth and take X-rays to see the health and condition of your jaw and teeth to determine eligibility.

Next, they will place the titanium post into your jawbone beneath the gum tissue. After this procedure, you will wait several months, giving the implant time to bond to the surrounding bone and tissue.

Once the tissue heals, the second stage involves placing an abutment or small post that helps attach the tooth replacement to the artificial root. Sometimes, your dentist may do the first and second stages in one appointment.

Then, your dentist attaches the tooth replacement, such as a crown, to the abutment. If more than one tooth is missing, your dentist may use a dental bridge.

Coverage for Dental Implants

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan does not cover those dental services provided in a dental office. However, they cover some in-hospital dental surgeries, such as:

Fracture repair

Tumour removal

Reconstructive surgeries

Medically necessary tooth removal

Most traditional dental insurance plans focus on preventive care, such as regular exams and cleanings, and basic dental procedures, such as fillings and extractions. Dental insurance coverage for dental implants can be limited, with many plans considering this procedure cosmetic or elective.

However, some insurance providers, which you might acquire through employee plans or private insurance, can offer dental implant coverage, though the extent of coverage can vary. Dental insurance plans that cater to dental implants and other major dental procedures help reduce the financial burden for individuals seeking this advanced tooth replacement option.

Dental insurance plans often have annual maximums, which limit the amount the insurer will pay for covered treatments within a year. If the dental implant cost exceeds this maximum, you will most likely be responsible for the remaining expenses.

What Does Your Plan Cover?

Coverage levels can depend on the following:

Limits: Dental insurance plans often have annual maximums, which limit the amount the insurer will pay for covered treatments within a year. If the dental implant cost exceeds this maximum, you will most likely be responsible for the remaining expenses.

Percentage of coverage: Coverage plans rarely cover 100% of Major dental services. Major services include Crowns, Bridges, Implants & Dentures. Common percentages for Major coverage are often between 50-80%. Some plans do not cover Major services at all.

Dual coverage: You may have additional coverage through a spouse or partner’s plan.

Reading your coverage includes familiarity with the information booklet and other pertinent details from your provider. This may involve understanding key terms, such as:

Deductible

Maximum

Limitations

Exclusions

Preauthorization

Factors Influencing Dental Coverage

Several factors can affect the extent of your dental insurance coverage for dental implants, including the following:

Plan Type: Different types of dental insurance offer varying levels of coverage, so it is essential to review the details of your specific plan before undergoing a dental procedure.

Reason for Tooth Loss: Insurance providers may consider the cause of tooth loss when determining coverage. For instance, dental implants for teeth lost due to accidents or trauma may have better coverage prospects than teeth lost due to pre-existing conditions.

Policy Exclusion: Some dental insurance plans may have specific exclusions for certain procedures, including dental implants. Always review your policy’s fine print to understand any limitations or exclusions.

Bone Grafting and Related Procedures: If bone grafting or other preparatory procedures are necessary before dental implant placement, the insurance coverage for these procedures may also impact overall implant coverage.

Despite having insurance, not everyone can get a dental implant. You are typically eligible for a dental implant if:

You are in good general health

You have healthy gums

You have enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant

You can have a bone graft if you do not have enough jawbone

Improving Dental Health with Implants

The extent of dental insurance coverage for dental implants can vary significantly based on the type of insurance plan you have and the specific terms and conditions of the policy. While some insurance plans may offer coverage for dental implants, others might consider them elective procedures, leaving you with a higher out-of-pocket cost.

Dental implants can significantly improve oral health and quality of life, so exploring your insurance options and speaking to your dentist about costs can help you make informed decisions regarding this transformative dental treatment.

Dental Implants: Benefits & Importance

Missing a tooth? There are options to fill in the space in your smile. A common choice is a dental implant, which makes an excellent replacement for a single missing tooth.

This type of procedure falls in the category of restorative dentistry, as it addresses the cosmetic appearance and the functionality of your teeth. Visit South Ancaster Family Dental to see how we can help maintain your smile.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that’s surgically fastened into your gums and capped with a false tooth. This procedure is done to replace a missing tooth.

The term dental implant itself actually refers specifically to the metal rod affixed in the jawbone, but it’s sometimes used casually to refer to the entire procedure.

What Does a Dental Implant Offer?

If you have concerns about undergoing a dental implant procedure, speak with your dentist. Bring forward any questions you need to have answered. Your dentist will explain the necessity of the procedure and ease your mind about undergoing dental work.

There are plenty of reasons to get a dental implant. We’ve included some here.

Permanence

Unlike removable false teeth, dental implants are permanent additions to your mouth. This means they can’t be misplaced, and once they’re correctly fitted, their comfort level should stay consistent.

Overall Dental Health

One of the upsides to dental implants is that they don’t interfere with your natural teeth. Other tooth replacements must often be braced against the teeth on each side of the gap, but dental implants can stand alone as they are fused directly to the jaw bone.

Improved Speech

Missing teeth can impact our speech patterns, depending on their location in the mouth. For example, missing front teeth can lead to whistling sounds or a lisp.

Corrected Bite

A missing tooth can change our bite and affect the way we chew. Compensating for a missing tooth can lead to stress and other parts of the jaw. Having space between your teeth can also allow teeth to shift, causing further problems.

A Complete Smile

Some people feel self-conscious about a gap in their teeth. Dental implants can improve both the functional and cosmetic aspects of your smile.

The Dental Implant Process

Knowing what to expect when you come into the office for a dental implant will help prepare you for the procedure in advance and ensure you have the right expectations for the timing of the implant.

Dental implants can take months. Multiple steps will be completed to ensure they’re done correctly, give your gums and jaw time to heal, and match the rest of your natural teeth.

Consultation

As with many dental procedures, the first step is a consultation. This means a complete exam of your teeth and mouth with x-rays. Your dentist and their team should also go over your complete medical history, including any medications you use.

Your dentist will evaluate your overall oral health and determine the best way to proceed with your implant.

Extraction

If there is still a damaged tooth present where the implant is going, it will be extracted before the procedure can begin.

Implant

The first part of the dental implant procedure is securing the implant itself. For this part of the procedure we work with highly trained Periodontists and/or Oral Surgeons. After undergoing local anesthesia, the metal (often titanium) implant will be inserted into your jaw. Once placed, your gums will be stitched closed, and your mouth will need time to heal.

Abutment

The abutment is the metal attachment that screws onto the implant. This is what connects the artificial tooth to the implant in the jaw.

This portion of the procedure may be done alongside the implant, though often multiple appointments are required.

Fitting the Artificial Tooth

An artificial tooth will be specially crafted to fit your mouth. It will be a close match for your natural teeth, both in size and colour.

Once this tooth has been custom-made, it will be fitted over the abutment until it works functionally, cosmetically, and comfortably. Once the artificial tooth is secure, the implant procedure is complete and should not need to be changed for years, as long as you take proper care of it.

Follow Up

It’s essential to come back for regular dental check-ups to make sure your implant is performing optimally and the gums around it are healthy.

If the implant starts causing you pain, or you notice anything else amiss, contact your dentist to have it looked at as soon as possible.

Caring for Your Dental Implant

Though the crown that tops a dental implant is false, you still need to ensure you clean it as thoroughly and regularly as you do the rest of your natural teeth. Any bacteria trapped by the false tooth can still affect the gums surrounding the tooth and the teeth next to it.

In pursuit of good dental hygiene, please be sure to:

Floss daily

Brush your teeth at least twice a day

Avoid excessive sugar, especially in beverages and snacks

See your dentist for regular exams cleanings and check-ups
